Corian®, a brand of solid surface produced by DuPont Nemours, is a popular choice for sink units and bathroom products. With its stone dust composition, Corian® comes in a variety of colours and styles, and looks like natural stone. However, the solid surface Corian® is much more durable than natural stone and requires less daily care. The material is relatively heat resistant and resistant to stains from usually very persistent products (tests with wine, betadine, eosin...), it does not require special coatings and is non-porous. On the other hand, it is always possible to damage Corian® products. Extreme heat, a sharp blow from heavy objects or abrasive products could damage Corian®. It is therefore good to know that Corian® is repairable no matter how it is damaged.

Tâche sur solid surface

Persistent stains and marks

To remove stains that will not come out with a sponge and soapy water, you will need a specific solid surface cleaner and a soft sponge. Simply scrub gently with the cleaner. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry the surface completely with a dry cloth. The stain on the Corian may require a second cleaning, in which case apply a Corian specific cleaning spray, then wipe and dry. Use a hard water stain remover to remove water spots, then rinse and dry.

If marks still remain after performing the above steps, pour a thin layer of slightly abrasive liquid cleaner onto a sponge and rub gently in overlapping circles until small scratches or stains disappear. Wipe off the cleaner with a damp cloth and dry.

Impact

Removing scratches and light damage

Sharp, heavy objects can scratch or scrape your Corian sink. This type of damage is more difficult to repair than simple stains. In this case, abrasive pads should be used. These very fine water-based sandpapers are very effective in making your surface look like new. Wash the area leaving a good layer of water, take a very fine water-based sandpaper and make overlapping circles until the scratches or light impact disappear. If the sanded area is different from the rest of the washbasin, sand the whole washbasin to make it even.

Repairing cracks and large impacts

Corian® solid surface products sometimes crack when a heavy object is dropped on them. These impacts are more difficult to repair and require professional help. We advise you to turn to a solid surface specialist or to call Vascoplan who will be able to guide you and assist you in your steps. This specialist will be able to repair the crack or impact directly at your home or in a workshop depending on the severity of the impact. If you wish to repair it yourself, you will need a router to remove the damaged part and replace it with a piece of solid surface of the same colour and shape. Using glue for solid surface of the same colour as your product, glue the pieces together while maintaining pressure so that all parts are well secured during drying. Finally, each sanding step must be followed carefully to obtain an identical result between the repair and the rest of your surface. To obtain an optimum result, you should sand the entire product so that the bonding you have made is invisible.

Produit chimique

Removing traces of chemicals

It is recommended that you do not pour chemicals such as drain cleaners or other corrosive products in the unit. There is a risk that your product will become tarnished or, in the case of coloured products, that it will turn white. Minor damages can be removed with very fine sandpaper and water. The more stained the product is, the more coarse-grained sandpaper should be used to remove the stain. If you use coarse sandpaper, you will then have to sand the entire surface with increasingly fine sandpaper.

As you can see, solid surface Corian® is undeniably a material that will last over time. No matter how damaged it is, there will always be a way to repair it. Repairs are durable, which means that the repaired areas are usually stronger than before, so don't worry, you can repair your Corian® products without making it more fragile. However, we recommend that you turn to a resin professional who will be able to carry out the repairs in the best possible way and as if it were knew!
